Mongolia Homestay – Northern Khuvsgul’s Reindeer

Welcome to Mongolia, the land of endless beautiful nature and home to nomadic people. “Discover Altai” offers you an unforgettable adventure “ Mongolia Homestay in northern Khuvsgul’s Reindeer Tribe”, where you can experience their ancient cultures.

Also, they are well known as a tribe of Tsaatan herders. Optionally, you can either join our annual “Christmas and New Year in the Mongolian Taiga” tour or else choose your individual private trip.

Nomadic reindeer herders or also well known as Tsaatan people migrate 3-4 times a year. And live in a teepee all year round. You have the opportunity to be part of their unique lifestyle and explore their ancient cultures.

There are only fifty families left in Khuvsgul’s Taiga who could keep their unique way of living, and sadly who are about to disappear. This is a fully guided expedition, where you can enjoy the magnificent Mongolian taiga, live in a teepee with a tribe of reindeer herders, and admire Lake Khuvsgul.

Also, you will be supported by an experienced local team consisting of an English-speaking guide, expedition cook, and experienced drivers with off-road vehicles. This is a winter tour that starts from December 1st to February 1st. And it is based to enjoy the great winter atmosphere.

You can join our group departure which starts on 23^rd December and is planned to celebrate Christmas and New Year. For more details please get in touch with us.

The tour will be started in the capital city of Ulaanbaatar and ends at the same place, and we highly recommend you book your trip as early as possible due to limited tickets in that period of the year.

Khuvsgul Province is one of the best places in Mongolia and is always at the top of the “must-visit” list. Khuvsgul lake is the largest fresh-watered lake in Mongolia and it is well known as Khuvsgul sea. Enjoy the crystal clear ice of frozen Khuvsgul.

We highly recommend you bring maximum warm clothes and a sleeping bag. The weather can reach -45 C at night. For the full list of “what to bring” please find below.

We will set up our own kitchen tent, where you can drink hot tea and coffee at any time. During the trip, you will not pay for additional entertainment, everything was included in the tour price. But you may need cash to buy souvenirs, alcoholic drinks, and tips.

Day 1: Welcome to Mongolia.

Welcome to Ulaanbaatar. Our team will meet you upon arrival at Chinggis Khaan Airport. You will be transferred to your three-star hotel located in the center of Ulaanbaatar. Please let us know your arrival details in advance. Also, if you are already in Mongolia and would like to join us, please share your location so we can pick you up. Welcome dinner at the restaurant

Day 2: Drive to Murun

Today we will go to the city of Murun. During the trip, we will use Land Cruiser SUVs. The road is good and we will take a break for lunch on the way. Upon arrival in Murun, you will be transferred to a local hotel.

Day 3: Drive to Tsagaan-nuur village

Today we will go to Tsagaannuur village, the northernmost village of Khuvsgul. It is a very long day and due to bad roads, it can take more than 8 hours. After a long day, we will reach the village of Tsagaan-nuur, where we will stay in a wooden guest house.

Day 4: Visit Reindeer Herder’s Tribe

Today we will go to a tribe of reindeer herders, which is not so far away. Upon arrival at the winter place, please follow the guide’s instructions before visiting the tribe. There are a few rules that are good to know. But in general, the people there are friendly and welcoming. Please feel free to take photos and videos. Homestay in reindeer herder’s traditional teepee

Day 5: Explore Reindeer herder’s usages

Today you have an opportunity to learn more about their ancient cultures. If you have a questions please feel free to ask them, your guide will assist you. Also, today we will ride a reindeer. Photographing day with reindeer people.

Day 6: Tsagaan-nuur village

Say goodbye to the Tsaatan people and drive back to the village. Stay overnight in a wooden house and take a rest in a warmer place.

Day 7: Renchinlkhumbe village & Jargalant river

Today we will visit one of the most beautiful rivers of the Khuvsgul province, the Jargalant River. It does not freeze in winter, and the steam from the water makes the environment so magical.

Day 8: Hatgal village & Khuvsgul lake

Khuvsgul lake is the biggest freshwater lake in Mongolia. With a length of 135 kilometers, it is well known as the sister lake of the Russian Baikal. Today we will go to the village of Khatgal, located on the shore of Lake Khuvsgul. Stay overnight in a wooden house.

Day 9: Enjoy stunning Khuvsgul lake.

Today we will enjoy the frozen lake Khuvsgul and visit the largest Mongolian boat, Sukhbaatar. As an alternative, we will ride horse-drawn sleds on a frozen lake. Enjoy a real adrenaline rush.

Day 10: Drive back to Ulaanbaatar

Today we will drive all the way to Ulaanbaatar. Upon arrival in the city, you will be transferred to your hotel. Farewell dinner with the team..

Day 11: End of the trip!

Tour price includes all accommodation during the trip. Two nights hotel in Ulaanbaatar, one night hotel in Murun, wooden guest house in Tsagaan-nuur and Hatgal villages and teepee at the reindeer herders place. For the group tour it is a shared rooms. But you always can have a private room with extra payment. For more details please contact us.

Warm boots, winter jacket, sunglasses, power bank, personal medicine, antiseptic, warm hat, gloves, thermos, flask, warm jacket, headlight, first aid, warm sleeping bag, neck pillow, and good mood.

Backpack, headlight, warm clothes, hat and gloves, waterproof jacket and pants, towel, personal medicine, cream, power bank, solar charger.

The tour is recommended for adventure lovers. This is truly one of the best winter expeditions that Mongolia has to offer. And, of course, you have to be in good shape. The weather going to be super cold and we highly recommend you bring the best warm clothes.

We are responsible for organizing the trip as originally planned. An experienced team will support you during your journey. We are responsible for booking hotels and domestic flights in advance. And prepare everything for a relaxing journey.

We ask you to respect everyone on the team. And we ask you to respect the traditions and beliefs of the nomadic peoples. Please don’t hurt your team’s feelings.

Be prepared for journey and any other activity your guide has asked you to be prepared for on time. If there is anything that makes you uncomfortable, please let your guide know first. And of course, the leader of the group is the guide, and please follow his/her commands.

Our team will meet you upon arrival at the airport. Therefore, please let us know your arrival details in advance. On the last day of the trip, you will be taken to your hotel room.

During the trip, there is no electricity at the reindeer herders place, and only villages has phone services. Therefore, please inform your family and loved ones in advance that you will not have telephone service and do not make them worry about you. We will have a small generator to charge our phone and camera, but there are still no guarantees for electricity.

There are several reasons why we strongly encourage you to join the group. First, this is the best support team. Large group tours are usually joined by experienced guides and experienced chefs who can make your trip memorable and enjoyable.

And group tours are planned for the best period of the year. And, of course, you can make new friends. We do our best to take care of every member of the group and organize the perfect trip.
