Gorkhi Terelj National Park is Mongolia‘s most visited national park. Located in the scenic Tuul River Valley, this beautiful area is full of stunning landscapes and wildlife. From vast green meadows to towering granite rock formations, Gorkhi Terelj has something for everyone.

LOCATION

The Terelj National Park or Gorkhi Terelj National Park is located 60 km from Ulaanbaatar to the south-east, which is 1.5-2 hours by car. It is nearest park to the city and covers 2,864 square km of truly picturesque landscapes with high mountains and cliffs, plenty of forests and rivers.

There are a number of tourist-friendly camps and resorts located near the Terelj River. Beyond that, the area becomes less populated and more scenic, with pristine natural beauty.

The deeper you go into the mountain forests, the richer they become in wildlife–you can find boar, red deer, roe deer, foxes, wolves, and more roaming around. And up in the skies you’ll see birds of prey flying overhead. In addition to all its natural beauty, Terelj was also once a hub for mining smokestone, amethyst, and pure crystal until 1960.

Paleozoic, Mesozoic and Cenozoic-era sedimentary rocks like coal and carboniferous argillites or siliceous rocks are spread throughout the area, in addition to crystals. Erosion from wind, rain, frost, ice and natural acids has created huge blocks of granite that have been carved into bizarre shapes such as a mushroom, camel or turtle.

Gorkhi-Terelj National Park is divided into the following three zones ;

  1. the restricted area where local nomads live and herd their livestock
  2. the strictly protected area, where rangers of the National park conduct their scientific researches
  3. environmental activities, and the tourist area.

Although approximately 376 entrepreneurs and local families run businesses in the tourist area, nature still dominates. Even if campsites rush into this once beautiful place, they cannot overpower nature’s beauty.
