Mongolia is served by several airlines, including MIAT Mongolian Airlines, Aero Mongolia, and Hunnu Air. Each airline offers a range of flights to destinations across Asia, Europe, and North America.
Before the pandemic and the Russian-Ukrainian war, most tourists used to arrive in Mongolia via Beijing or Moscow. And due to these, last couple of years has been quite difficult for both international and domestic flights.
Although the availability and cost of tickets were restricted in the past, flight schedules are gradually increasing, making more flights accessible to passengers at a lower overall expense.
Currently there are three airlines operating in Mongolia. Let’s take a close look at them.
MIAT Airline: www.miat.com
MIAT is the first airline operator and was founded back in 1956. And it is a state-owned national flag carrier airline. MIAT is a major international airline based in Mongolia with flights to over 15 countries. And it has a number of partner airlines around the world.
Countries and cities from which MIAT has direct flights to Ulaanbaatar:
Seoul, Busan, Tokyo, Osaka, Beijing, Bangkok, Phuket, Taipei, Singapore, Bali, Manila, Ho Chi Minh, Sydney, Melbourne, Istanbul, Berlin, Frankfurt.
MIAT is known for providing excellent customer service, with amenities such as in-flight entertainment, comfortable seating, and delicious meals. The airline also offers a frequent flyer program for regular customers. MIAT is a member of the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and has been awarded a 3-star rating from the global airline review organization, Skytrax.
Aero Mongolia: www.aeromongolia.mn
Aero Mongolia is a Mongolian airline that was founded in 2002 and is headquartered in Ulaanbaatar, the capital of Mongolia. Aero Mongolia is the leading national airline with a number of domestic flights and a several international flights to Russian Irkutsk, Chinese Tianjin and Huh Hot, and Japanese Narita.
There are regular domestic flights from Ulaanbaatar to such tourist provinces as Umnugobi, Khuvsgul, Bayan-Ulgiy, Khovd, and Uvs. Please note that the number of tickets is limited, and try to purchase them as early as possible.
The airline’s fleet consists of modern aircraft, including Bombardier CRJ200 and CRJ700 jets, as well as ATR42-500 and ATR72-500. Aero Mongolia is known for providing safe and comfortable flights, with amenities such as in-flight entertainment and comfortable seating. The airline also offers a frequent flyer program for regular customers.
Hunnu Air: www.hunnuair.com
And the third is Hunnu Air, which also has a number of both international and domestic flights. Hunnu Air currently operates flights to Almaty, Manila, Beijing, Ulan-Ude, and Harbin. During the tourist season, Hunnu air starts selling tickets for domestic flights, and they are usually slightly cheaper than Aero Mongolia.
Delay or cancel the trip: This isn’t as common with international flights, but it’s common for domestic flights. Your flight may be delayed due to bad weather conditions. Or it may land in a neighboring province, where you will reach your final destination by bus.
Therefore, we strongly recommend that you have a couple of extra days if you are planning a trip to Mongolia. Please try to get back to Ulaanbaatar at least a day before you leave the country
Price: Compared to other Asian countries, traveling to Mongolia is more expensive. And the list of locations for direct flights is also not so great. As we mentioned earlier, the situation with neighboring countries, Russia and China, affects our tourism industry.
But we believe that it is a matter of time before things will eventually get better.
