Mongolia is located between Russia and China. Mongolia ranks 18th in the world in terms of area with 1.5 million sq. km / 604 thousand sq. miles. This is more than the territories of Spain, France and Italy combined.
With only 3.3 million people living in such a large country, Mongolia is the least densely populated country in the world. From west to east it reaches 2392 km / 1486 miles and from north to south the maximum distance is 1259 km / 782 miles.
The country is located on the same latitude as Europe. Mongolia is classified as a landlocked country and has a marked continental climate with long and cold winters. In addition, Mongolia is one of the highest countries with an average altitude of 1580 meters / 5180 feet above sea level.
And the Gobi desert is the highest and coldest desert in the world. The landscapes of the country are covered with mountains and plateaus, and about a third of the territory is occupied by the Gobi Desert. The western and northern parts are mostly mountain forest.
The major mountain ranges are Altai, Khangai and Khentii. The largest lake is Lake Uvs and the largest freshwater lake is Khuvsgul. The major rivers are Orkhon, Kherlen, and Selenge. The most of the land is steppe, semidesert, and desert. The climate is very dry.
